CDL practice test FAQ
Answers to the questions we hear most often from CDL candidates.
Is LicenseReady free?
Yes. Every practice test, every state page, every study guide is free and requires no account. We pay the bills with display advertising.
Are the questions real CDL exam questions?
The questions are paraphrased from the FMCSA CDL Manual — the same source every state DMV uses to write its exam. They are not the literal questions from any state DMV (those are confidential), but the underlying rules and the format are identical.
What score do I need to pass the actual CDL exam?
80% on every section. That’s the federal standard and it applies in all 50 states and DC. We recommend hitting 90% on practice tests before scheduling the real exam.
How many questions are on the real exam?
Roughly 50 for General Knowledge, 25 each for Air Brakes and Combination Vehicles, 30 for Hazmat, and 20 for each remaining endorsement (Tanker, Doubles/Triples, Passenger, School Bus). LicenseReady mirrors those counts.
Do I have to take all eight tests?
No. Every applicant takes General Knowledge. After that, you only take the endorsements that match the work you’ll be doing. Most over-the-road truck drivers take General Knowledge, Air Brakes, and Combination Vehicles. Bus drivers take Passenger; school-bus drivers take Passenger and School Bus.
How long do I have to wait between attempts?
Each state sets its own retest waiting period. Most allow you to retake the test the next business day, with a small re-test fee. A handful of states require a 7-day or 14-day wait after consecutive failures.
Does Hazmat require anything besides the written test?
Yes. Hazmat applicants must pass a TSA Threat Assessment background check in addition to the written exam. Apply early; it can take several weeks to clear.
What is the Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP)?
Passing the knowledge test earns you a CLP, which lets you practice driving a commercial vehicle on public roads with a CDL-holding instructor in the cab. You must hold a CLP for at least 14 days before you can take the road skills test.
Can I use LicenseReady on my phone?
Yes. The site is plain HTML and works on any device with a modern browser. There is no app to download.
Do the questions update when federal rules change?
Yes. We track FMCSA rule changes and update the question bank as needed. If you spot something out of date, please tell us through the contact page.
Where can I get the official CDL handbook?
Every state DMV publishes its CDL handbook as a free PDF on its website. Check your state’s licensing agency — the agency name is listed on every state page on LicenseReady.
